The Major Issue of the Digitalized World: "Loneliness"

Alongside the many conveniences and advantages that digitalization has brought into our lives, this transformation also has a significant side effect that should not be overlooked: loneliness. Today, loneliness, often referred to as the "illness of the age," is becoming increasingly widespread and one of the greatest challenges faced by societies. Despite advancements such as the proliferation of communication tools, easier access to information, and the expansion of transportation networks, which are expected to promote greater social interaction, these developments are instead causing people to retreat into their inner worlds. Consequently, loneliness is evolving from being an individual issue to a societal problem.

Loneliness has significant impacts, particularly on individuals during adolescence, where the perception of "perfect lives" often encountered on social media platforms leads young people to compare their own lives to those of others. This comparison fosters feelings of exclusion, inadequacy, and worthlessness, further deepening loneliness and making it a lasting issue. For instance, by spending excessive time in the virtual world, people distance themselves from physical social interactions, lose their face-to-face communication skills, and ultimately experience social isolation. Addressing this issue requires digital awareness to play a critical role. Raising awareness among young people about responsible social media use can help them strike a balance between virtual and real life. Additionally, the creation of virtual platforms and the proper use of these platforms can support individuals' sense of belonging, thereby reducing feelings of loneliness.

The issue of loneliness is not limited to young people; it also manifests among elderly individuals with different dynamics. The weakening of traditional extended family structures and the rise of individualism often leave elderly individuals to face loneliness. Factors such as physical mobility limitations, difficulties in adapting to technology, and generational gaps contribute to the isolation of older adults from social life. At this point, integrating technology into the lives of elderly individuals becomes critically important. Through technology training and digital literacy projects, seniors can use communication tools more effectively, strengthening their social connections. With the support of family members and the community, this process can become easier. For example, video call applications and digital communities can help reduce feelings of loneliness among older adults and enable them to participate more actively in social life.

Excessive use of social media among young people and the lack of technological engagement among the elderly both contribute to their isolation. Therefore, balance is the most important concept in addressing this issue. If digital tools are used correctly and consciously in our lives, a significant step can be taken toward solving the problem of loneliness. For young people, social media usage should be limited, physical social interactions encouraged, and digital awareness programs organized. For the elderly, digital literacy training, easier access to technology, and support through social projects should be provided. In this way, connections between different segments of society can be strengthened, fostering a healthier communication environment.

When used correctly, digitalization can become a powerful tool in addressing societal issues like loneliness. By developing appropriate policies for young people and the elderly, individuals can be encouraged to participate more actively in social life, thereby strengthening the sense of solidarity and belonging within society. Overcoming the problem of loneliness requires societal awareness and collective solutions, rather than individual efforts alone. By using technology responsibly, it is possible to create a more inclusive and interconnected world. Together, we can achieve this. And we will.
