The fourth movie of the Matrix series, "Matrix Resurrections," has been released. But did the movie meet expectations?
This article contains spoilers about the movie, so I do not recommend reading it without watching the movie first.
At the end of the third movie, we saw the deaths of Neo and Trinity, and a truce was made with the machines, but the war did not end.
In the fourth movie, many scenes are shown as flashbacks. Some machines have sided with humans, while others have started fighting among themselves due to energy problems. Niobe's memory of the machines fighting each other, shown in the image below, is only displayed for 4 seconds, with no further details provided. I expected such an event to be explored in more depth.
In this film, we see that the programs in the Matrix can cross over into the real world using a method called "paramagnetic oscillation." These programs, like humans, choose to awaken by taking the blue pill. Morpheus, whom we know from the original series, started governing Zion after the truce with the machines and later passed away. In the new film, the Morpheus character we see is a program written by Neo himself within the new Matrix.
In Matrix Resurrections, Zion has been renamed IO. IO is governed by Niobe, and she has established a much more advanced settlement compared to Zion.
The new Matrix has no Architect or Oracle. Instead, there is a program called the Analyst. The Analyst is the psychologist we see talking to Neo in the trailer. The Analyst says that the codes of desire and fear are the same and that this is how he built the new Matrix system. He also explains that he solved the energy issues by keeping Neo and Trinity close but just out of reach of each other. The energy these two people provide to the machines is extremely high with the new version of the Matrix.
The first half of the movie revolves around Neo, while the second half focuses on Neo trying to awaken Trinity. When comparing the technology available during the production of the original series to today's technology, the graphics in the new film fall short. Additionally, the main reason many people did not like the film was that they were hoping to see something new. However, from what I observed, the film did not stray from its intended story. The story in the original trilogy created a huge impact due to the technology at that time. However, because the message being conveyed is theoretically possible in the near future, if not exactly today, it did not meet the expectations of most viewers.
Also, here is some additional information about the movie:
Warner Bros approached the Wachowski siblings to make the 4th film, and when the Wachowskis rejected the offer, they said, "We will make this movie with or without you." As a result, Lana Wachowski took on the role of director to prevent the movie from being given to someone else. This situation is also referenced in the movie.
